The interview opened by C. K. Yuan explaining X on behalf of Lord Li that it was quite impossible for the Linis- try to accept the British proposal of 40 --20). Yuan pointed out that Lord Li, had agreed to raise their offer by 5 per cent i.e., 25% 75% but this was the very utmost concession that could be made and he fell back upon the old argument that the division of profits should be based on the actual length of the line itself. Yuan added that he himself was against making the concession of 5 points but that Lord Li had over- ruled him. Lord Li spoke a little to the same effect and urged Sir John to accept the very reasonable offer now made, Sir John replied that he regretted to learn that after all this delay the Linistry had no further offer to make and he warned Lord Li thật unless this business matter was satisfac- torily concluded that day, he would be obliged to take up the whole question of the carrying out of the Canton Kowloon Railway Agreement with the Wai Wu Pu and that would mean bringing up joint management' again. Yuan here remarked that the Ministry had submitted the Hongkong Government proposals to several foreigners of experience in railway matters and they had all considered that the proportion claimed would be
